How Pokemon Type Calculations Work
How damage multipliers, STAB bonuses, Terastallization, and weather interact during battles.
Dual Type Damage Multipliers
When a Pokemon has two types, their defensive multipliers combine multiplicatively.
Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB)
Attacks matching your Pokemon's native type deal 1.5× baseline damage.
Terastallization in Gen 9
Terastallizing replaces a Pokemon's defensive typing with its pure Tera Type.
Weather and Terrain Effects
Active battle weather and terrain directly modify move damage and defensive stats.
Abilities That Override the Type Chart
Several abilities let Pokemon ignore type weaknesses, absorb incoming attacks, or bypass natural immunities.
Levitate & Earth Eater
Levitate gives full immunity to Ground type moves, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes. Earth Eater absorbs incoming Ground attacks to restore 25% of the user's max HP instead of taking damage.
Flash Fire & Well-Baked Body
Flash Fire absorbs Fire moves, taking zero damage and boosting the user's own Fire attacks by 1.5×. Well-Baked Body gives complete Fire immunity and boosts physical Defense by two stages.
Water Absorb & Storm Drain
Water Absorb heals 25% of max HP when struck by Water attacks. Storm Drain draws single-target Water attacks to the user in Double Battles, negating damage and boosting Special Attack.
Volt Absorb & Lightning Rod
Volt Absorb heals 25% of max HP when hit by Electric moves. Lightning Rod draws Electric attacks, grants full immunity, and raises the user's Special Attack by one stage.
Sap Sipper
Sap Sipper provides complete immunity to Grass type attacks and powder moves like Spore and Sleep Powder. Each time a Grass attack hits, the user gains a one-stage Attack boost.
Scrappy & Mind's Eye
Scrappy and Mind's Eye bypass Ghost type immunities, allowing Normal and Fighting moves to hit Ghost Pokemon for standard neutral damage while ignoring accuracy drops.

Frequently Asked Battle Questions
Common questions about type matchups, damage calculations, and generational differences.
The Pokemon type chart shows damage multipliers when one type attacks another. In modern games, there are 18 types. Attacks deal super effective damage (2x), normal damage (1x), not very effective damage (0.5x), or zero damage (0x).
When a Pokemon has two types, their defensive multipliers multiply together. If an attack is super effective (2x) against both types, the Pokemon takes 4x damage. If one type is weak (2x) and the other resists (0.5x), the attack deals normal 1x damage. If either type is immune, the Pokemon takes zero damage.
Normal and Electric have the fewest weaknesses among pure types, with only one weakness each. Normal is weak only to Fighting, and Electric is weak only to Ground. Dual typings with only one weakness include Water and Ground (weak only to Grass) and Poison and Dark (weak only to Ground).
Steel is the best defensive type in Pokemon. A pure Steel Pokemon resists 10 different attack types and cannot be poisoned by Poison moves. It is only weak to three types: Fire, Fighting, and Ground.
STAB stands for Same Type Attack Bonus. When a Pokemon uses an attack that matches its own type, that move deals 1.5x damage. Pokemon with the Adaptability ability get a 2x bonus instead.
Generation 1 had 15 types. Gen 2 added Dark and Steel, with Steel originally resisting Dark and Ghost. Gen 6 added Fairy to balance Dragon, and removed Steel's resistance to Dark and Ghost moves.
Pokemon GO does not have complete zero-damage immunities. Instead, immunities deal 0.39x damage. Super effective attacks deal 1.6x damage (or 2.56x for dual weaknesses), and resisted attacks deal 0.625x damage.
Scrappy and Mind's Eye allow Normal and Fighting moves to hit Ghost types. Mold Breaker and Teravolt ignore defensive abilities like Levitate, allowing Ground moves to hit airborne Pokemon. Corrosion lets Poison moves inflict the poisoned status on Steel and Poison types.
