How Pokemon Dual Type Calculations Work

Every battle calculation multiplies attacking move effectiveness against both defending types simultaneously.

When a Pokemon has two types, their individual defensive multipliers combine using standard multiplication. An incoming attack is evaluated against Type 1, then evaluated against Type 2, and the two values multiply together to produce the final damage factor.

2x × 2x = 4x Damage
Double weakness (super effective against both types, like Grass moves hitting Swampert or Fire moves hitting Scizor).
2x × 1x = 2x Damage
Single weakness (super effective against one type and neutral against the other).
2x × 0.5x = 1x Damage
Neutral cancellation (a weakness and a resistance cancel each other out completely).
0.5x × 1x = 0.5x Damage
Single resistance (one type resists the move while the other is neutral).
0.5x × 0.5x = 0.25x Damage
Double resistance (both types resist the move, reducing damage down to one quarter).
Any × 0x = 0x Damage
Total immunity (a natural type immunity overrides all incoming multipliers to zero damage).
The 0x Immunity Priority Rule: If either defending type possesses a natural type immunity to an incoming attack (0x), the final damage is always zero, regardless of what the other type would have taken. For example, a Flying and Steel Pokemon (such as Skarmory or Corviknight) takes 0x damage from Ground attacks despite Steel being naturally weak to Ground.

Abilities That Override Type Weaknesses

Certain defensive abilities completely alter standard type chart math, turning major weaknesses into immunities, heals, or stat buffs.

● Ground Immunity

Levitate & Earth Eater

Grants full immunity to all Ground type attacks, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes. Earth Eater restores 25% max HP when hit by a Ground attack.

Common Users: Rotom-Wash, Flygon, Hydreigon, Orthworm
● Fire Immunity

Flash Fire & Well-Baked

Grants complete immunity to Fire moves. Flash Fire powers up the user's Fire attacks by 50%, while Well-Baked Body boosts Defense by 2 stages.

Common Users: Heatran, Ceruledge, Dachsbun, Arcanine
● Water Immunity

Water Absorb & Storm Drain

Grants total immunity to Water attacks. Water Absorb recovers 25% max HP, while Storm Drain redirects Water attacks in doubles and boosts Sp. Atk.

Common Users: Clodsire, Vaporeon, Gastrodon, Volcanion
● Electric Immunity

Volt Absorb & Lightning Rod

Nullifies all incoming Electric damage. Volt Absorb heals 25% max HP, Lightning Rod boosts Sp. Atk, and Motor Drive increases Speed by 1 stage.

Common Users: Kilowattrel, Raichu, Electivire, Thundurus-T
● Grass Immunity

Sap Sipper

Grants full immunity to Grass damage and spore moves like Spore and Sleep Powder, while raising the user's Attack stat by 1 stage.

Common Users: Goodra, Azumarill, Bouffalant, Farigiraf
● Damage Halved

Thick Fat & Purifying Salt

Thick Fat cuts incoming Fire and Ice move damage in half (50%). Purifying Salt cuts Ghost damage in half and prevents all status conditions.

Common Users: Snorlax, Hariyama, Garganacl, Walrein

Top Defensive Dual-Type Combinations

These four dual-type pairings offer the highest resistance-to-weakness ratios in competitive Pokemon battles.

Steel Fairy
2 Weaknesses

Steel / Fairy

Tinkaton, Zacian, Mawile, Klefki

The premier defensive typing in Pokemon history. Resists nine different types and possesses complete immunities to Poison and Dragon, leaving it vulnerable to only Fire and Ground.

Water Ground
1 Weakness

Water / Ground

Swampert, Quagsire, Gastrodon

Ground removes Water's Electric weakness with full immunity, leaving this dual type with only one single weakness: Grass (which deals 4x quad damage).

Ghost Dark
1 Weakness

Ghost / Dark

Sableye, Spiritomb

Had zero weaknesses in Generations 3 to 5. Since Generation 6, it is weak only to Fairy moves, while carrying natural immunities to Normal, Fighting, and Psychic attacks.

Normal Ghost
1 Weakness

Normal / Ghost

Hisuian Zoroark

A unique defensive profile with three natural immunities: Normal, Fighting, and Ghost. It carries only one weakness to Dark type moves, making it exceptionally elusive.

How Terastallization Changes Defenses

Terastallizing replaces your Pokemon's defensive typing with its pure Tera Type for the rest of the battle.

Defensive Replacement Rule

When a dual-type Pokemon Terastallizes, its original defensive profile is immediately replaced by the pure defensive profile of its Tera Type. All original dual weaknesses and resistances disappear defensively.

For example, if Swampert (Water/Ground) Terastallizes into a pure Grass Tera Type, it no longer takes 4x damage from Grass attacks. Instead, it resists Grass (0.5x damage) and takes super effective damage from Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, and Bug.

Grass Tera
0.5x Resists Grass
Key Competitive Takeaways
  • Wipe Quad Weaknesses: Switch to a pure type defensively to neutralize devastating 4x weaknesses on the turn an opponent attacks.
  • Preserve Abilities: Abilities like Levitate or Earth Eater stay active while Terastallized. An Electric Tera Pokemon with Levitate has zero weaknesses.
  • Offensive STAB Retained: You keep Same Type Attack Bonus on your original types while gaining STAB on your Tera Type.

Frequently Asked Battle Questions

Clear answers to common questions about type calculations, abilities, and coverage sets.

A Pokemon type calculator determines incoming damage multipliers. It multiplies attack effectiveness against the defender's primary and secondary types, factoring in abilities like Levitate or Earth Eater.

Dual defenses multiply together. If both types are weak to an attack, damage is 4x. If one type is weak (2x) and one resists (0.5x), damage is normal 1x. If both resist, damage is 0.25x. Any natural immunity results in 0x damage.

Water and Ground (like Swampert and Quagsire) and Poison and Dark (like Drapion) each have only one weakness. Water and Ground is weak only to Grass, and Poison and Dark is weak only to Ground.

Steel and Fairy is widely considered the best defensive typing. Pokemon like Tinkaton and Zacian resist nine types and carry two immunities (Poison and Dragon), leaving them weak to only Fire and Ground.

Terastallizing replaces a Pokemon's defensive typing with its pure Tera Type. A Water and Ground Pokemon Terastallized into Grass loses its 4x Grass weakness and defends as a pure Grass type.

Levitate and Earth Eater grant Ground immunity. Flash Fire and Well-Baked Body grant Fire immunity. Water Absorb and Storm Drain grant Water immunity. Volt Absorb and Lightning Rod grant Electric immunity. Sap Sipper grants Grass immunity.
