How Fairy Performs in Battle
See how Fairy's Dragon immunity works, what attacks hit Fairy super effectively, and how Fairy moves hit on offense.
Fairy Type Pokemon Weakness
- Poison (2×): Moves like Sludge Bomb and Gunk Shot deal double damage. Teams often run Poison coverage specifically to hit Fairy switch-ins.
- Steel (2×): Attacks like Iron Head, Flash Cannon, and Bullet Punch hit Fairy types hard. Bullet Punch is especially dangerous because it moves first.
- Only Two Weaknesses: Pure Fairy only has two weaknesses in the whole game. That makes it very easy to protect with teammates.
Damage Negation
- 0× Dragon Immunity: Fairy takes zero damage from Dragon attacks. It completely blocks heavy moves like Draco Meteor and Outrage.
- Fighting & Dark Resistance (0.5×): Fairy takes half damage from strong attacks like Close Combat, Knock Off, and Sucker Punch.
- Bug Resistance (0.5×): Bug moves deal half damage. That cuts down chip damage from U-turn pivots.
Offensive Coverage
- 2× Super-Effective: Fairy moves deal double damage to Dragon, Fighting, and Dark types. That makes Fairy attacks great on both physical and special sets.
- Hits Every Type: No type is immune to Fairy damage. Fairy moves hit 15 out of 18 types for neutral or super-effective damage.
- Resisted by 3 Types: Only Fire, Poison, and Steel resist Fairy moves. Running Ground or Fire coverage easily beats those checks.
Fairy Type Battle Mechanics
Dragon immunity, Misty Terrain effects, and key mechanics introduced in Generation 6.
Fairy Pokemon take zero damage from Dragon attacks. That means moves like Draco Meteor, Outrage, and Dragon Claw do nothing. Opponents have to predict your switch and use coverage moves like Iron Head or Earthquake instead.
Misty Terrain stays active for 5 turns, or 8 turns with a Terrain Extender. While it is up, grounded Pokemon cannot get burned, paralyzed, poisoned, put to sleep, or confused. It also cuts incoming Dragon move damage by half for grounded targets.
When Fairy came out in Gen 6, the type chart got a major update. Steel lost its old resistances to Dark and Ghost. But Steel and Poison both gained a huge offensive buff by hitting Fairy super effectively. That gave Poison and Steel moves a big reason to be used on attack.
