How Dragon Performs in Battle
See how Dragon's starter resistances hold up, what attacks hit Dragon super effectively, and how Dragon moves hit on offense.
Dragon Type Pokemon Weakness
- Ice (2×): Attacks like Ice Beam, Blizzard, and Ice Spinner deal double damage. Combined Flying, Ground, or Grass typing creates a 4x weakness to Ice moves.
- Dragon (2×): Dragon attacks deal double damage to other Dragon Pokemon. Fast Dragon sweepers can knock out opposing Dragons before taking a hit.
- Fairy (2×): Fairy attacks like Moonblast and Play Rough deal double damage. Fairy Pokemon also take zero damage from incoming Dragon moves.
Defensive Resistances
- Elemental Starter Resistances (0.5×): Dragon resists all four traditional starter types: Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric. This allows Dragon Pokemon to switch into common elemental attacks with reduced damage.
- Secondary Type Immunities: Pure Dragon Pokemon have zero natural damage immunities. Secondary typings provide full immunities: Ground grants an Electric immunity, Flying grants a Ground immunity, Steel grants a Poison immunity, and Ghost grants Normal and Fighting immunities.
Offensive Coverage
- Super Effective on Dragon (2×): Dragon attacks deal double damage against other Dragon Pokemon. In mirror matchups, Speed tiers and priority often decide the outcome.
- Wide Neutral Coverage: Dragon moves hit 15 single types for neutral (1x) damage. Only Steel resists Dragon (0.5x), and Fairy is immune (0x).
- High Base Power Moves: Attacks like Draco Meteor and Outrage deal heavy neutral damage, forcing opposing teams to rely on Steel or Fairy Pokemon to absorb hits.
Dragon Type Battle Mechanics
Starter resistances, generational balance changes, and core battle mechanics.
Dragon Pokemon hold the highest average Base Stat Total in Pokemon across both base species (504.8 BST) and all battle forms (558.8 BST). The type features eight 600 BST pseudo-legendary lines (Dragonite, Salamence, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Goodra, Kommo-o, Dragapult, and Baxcalibur) alongside major Legendary Pokemon like Rayquaza, Dialga, and Miraidon. Alternate battle forms like Mega Rayquaza (780 BST) and the non-playable boss form Eternamax Eternatus (1125 BST) raise the form average even higher.
In Generation 1, Dragon had only Dragon Rage, dealing fixed 40 damage. From Generation 2 through Generation 5, Steel was the only type that resisted Dragon attacks, and no type was immune. Generation 6 rebalanced the type chart by introducing Fairy, giving it a complete damage immunity (0x) to Dragon attacks and super-effective 2x damage against Dragon Pokemon. Steel retained its Dragon resistance, providing teams two distinct ways to check Dragon moves.
Several signature Dragon attacks trade raw damage for tactical risks. Outrage delivers 120 physical power for 2 to 3 turns before confusing the user, but if a Fairy Pokemon switches in, the move deals zero damage and ends immediately without confusing the user. Draco Meteor hits for 130 special power but lowers the user's Special Attack by two stages (-2). Glaive Rush deals 120 physical power, but causes incoming attacks against the user to deal double damage and never miss until its next turn.

Dragon Type Battle Questions
Direct answers to the most common questions about Dragon Pokemon.
Dragon type Pokemon are weak to Ice, Dragon, and Fairy moves. Each of these types deals 2x super-effective damage against pure Dragon Pokemon. If a Dragon has a secondary type like Flying, Ground, or Grass, incoming Ice attacks deal 4x damage instead. Dragon is also weak to its own type, and Fairy attacks bypass Dragon defenses while remaining immune to Dragon moves.
Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks deal super-effective damage against Dragon Pokemon. Ice moves like Ice Beam and priority Ice Shard are popular counters because several common Dragons take 4x Ice damage. Fairy Pokemon like Clefable and Flutter Mane provide reliable defensive switch-ins because they take zero damage from Dragon attacks. On defense, Steel Pokemon resist Dragon moves and take half damage.
By Base Stat Total, Eternatus ranks highest among standard species at 690 BST. Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, and Zekrom share second place tied at 680 BST, followed by Koraidon and Miraidon at 670 BST. In standard competitive formats where major Legendaries are restricted, pseudo-legendary Pokemon like Garchomp, Dragapult, Dragonite, and Baxcalibur are top choices due to their 600 base stat totals, strong abilities, and flexible movepools.
Major Dragon type legendary Pokemon include Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Zygarde, Eternatus, Koraidon, and Miraidon. Sub-legendary and Paradox Dragon species include Latias, Latios, Regidrago, Roaring Moon, Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, and Raging Bolt. Ultra Beasts like Guzzlord and Naganadel also carry Dragon typing.
In Pokemon GO raids, Mega Rayquaza, Mega Garchomp, Shadow Dragonite, and Shadow Salamence deal some of the highest Dragon damage in the game. For Master League PvP, Dialga (and Dialga Origin), Giratina (both Altered and Origin Forme), Dragonite, and Palkia Origin are top performers due to their bulk and high-damage fast moves like Dragon Breath and Dragon Tail.
In Generation 1 (Red, Blue, and Yellow), the Dratini evolution line was the only Dragon type family in the game: Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite. Lance, the final member of the Indigo Plateau Elite Four, served as the original Dragon trainer, filling out his team with Dragon-like Water and Flying Pokemon including Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Charizard.
Dragon was introduced as a distinct type in the Pokemon Trading Card Game during the Black and White era in the Dragons Exalted set (2012), marked by a gold dragon symbol. Dragon cards do not have their own basic Energy cards. Instead, Dragon Pokemon attacks require two different basic Energy types, such as Fire and Water for Dragonite, or Grass and Lightning for Rayquaza.
